In May 2009, the Johnson County, Kansas, Facilities Management Department began the design process for a roughly 15,000-square-foot forensic laboratory that will complement its existing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certified office building. The issue of environmental sustainability in this project is of great importance to the suburban county, which is undergoing a greenhouse gas inventory. For this reason, Johnson County has set aggressive performance goals during the planning phases of the project, including surpassing ASHRAE 90.1 standards by 50 percent and achieving LEED Platinum certification.

The Labs21 Technical Team assisted Johnson County during the planning phase of the project by reviewing schematic designs and noting possible opportunities to increase performance and better meet ASHRAE standards. Additionally, the design team reviewed the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria with the goal of incorporating them into the building plan as much as possible. Johnson County also plans to utilize full commissioning and energy modeling services to ensure that the building is designed for maximum efficiency. Resources available in the Labs21 Tool Kit will be explored to assist with documentation of lab-specific goals, progress, and success.

Included in the sustainable technologies are a ground source heat pump system, enthalpy energy recovery wheel, demand control ventilation system, high-performance fume hoods with automatic sash controls, photovoltaic panels, daylighting, a green roof, and many more features.
