Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory

MDI Biological Lab logo

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) is currently in the final stage of submitting a green building grant for a new 15,000 square-foot research facility in Salisbury Cove, Maine. Approaching the schematic design phase, the plan for the new facility is being developed by a team of architects, who have registered the facility with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for LEED® certification. The new building will be set within native landscaping and natural rain gardens and will be linked to existing structures that will also undergo green improvements.

With the help of Labs21 through this Partner project, MDIBL plans to improve the efficiency of their systems and energy use, with the goals of optimizing water and energy use by 30 and 50 percent respectively. Labs21 tools will be useful in planning the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems of the facility and will also be helpful in achieving the management goals of the existing buildings. The possibilities of utilizing renewable power and various green technologies for the new facility systems are also being discussed.
