Pfizer, Inc.
Pfizer, Inc. is constructing its New Research Building (NRB) in Chesterfield, Missouri. The 320,000 gross square foot (gsf) facility will house a vivarium and a biological discovery research center. The research center will occupy approximately 160,000 gsf of the facility, and include 120,000 gsf of laboratory space with 10 fume hoods and 25 biosafety cabinets. Throughout planning and construction of the NRB, Pfizer remains dedicated to maintaining a consistent green building approach.
Utilizing Pfizer's own Green Building Process in conjunction with Labs21 low-energy concepts and Environmental Performance Criteria, drastic cuts in the environmental impact of the new facility were implemented early in the design phase. With the help of Labs21 resources, a 21 percent reduction in energy use and 28 percent reduction in water use were achieved over the initial design baseline. Due to the increased energy efficiency, Pfizer was able to reduce future emissions of carbon dioxide green house gas equivalents by nearly 26,000 metric tons, the equivalent of that emitted by approximately 1,500 cars in a year.
Continuing to utilize Labs21 support as the NRB project progresses, Pfizer will be developing a construction waste management plan with the goal of recycling or reclaiming at least 50 percent of all its construction waste materials by weight. Pfizer will also utilize Labs21 technical support for review of its commissioning protocol during construction.
