Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is in the advanced planning stages for the construction of a new laboratory and retrofitting of an older laboratory on campus. Built in 1965, the outmoded designs of the existing building are being upgraded to improve health, safety, and energy efficiency. The new building, which will stand 30 feet from the existing facility, will allow for teachers to conduct research in their own laboratories with their students—a new approach for SIUE.

The main sustainability goals of SIUE's project are to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) 2.2 Silver or Gold certification, to perform 20 percent better than ASHRAE 90.1-2004 standards, and to have both the new and retrofitted building use less energy when operational than the existing building currently uses. Making the choice to strive for these sustainability goals was done not just from a desire for cost savings, but more so to ensure proper design techniques are implemented.

Incorporating lower ventilation rates with additional setback for unoccupied hours will help SIUE achieve its energy reduction and sustainability goals. The buildings will be the first in the state of Illinois to be fully commissioned. In addition to these measures, the university is seeking grant funding for demonstrative wind and solar photovoltaic projects.

Labs21 will assist SIUE by recommending areas where they can push more advanced technologies or sustainability measures. Labs21 will help perform energy modeling for the facilities and assess opportunities for equipment right-sizing. Construction is planned to start in May 2010 with a projected finish by November 2011.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, located 15 miles from downtown St. Louis, Missouri, is home to more than 13,600 students spread throughout the Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing schools with professional degree programs in dental, medicine, and pharmacy. With a bustling laboratory, operating seven days a week, the university is looking to become a leader in sustainable and efficient design. To learn more, visit the SIUE website. Exit
