Stanford University
From guiding performance goals to developing innovative solutions, Labs21 influenced the design of Stanford's Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building (Y2E2). The building's lower level features eight laboratories, including an Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (EFML) where researchers use large flumes to run experiments. Underground storage tanks and treatment facilities allow this process water to be recycled, reducing the replacement frequency from almost daily to every few months. In addition to water systems, Labs21 provided guidance on ventilation rates and strategies to right-size the systems. Segregating energy-intensive process operations and tasks from lower ones—locating equipment rooms outside labs and zoning them separately—resulted in energy and ventilation requirement savings. Commissioning fume hoods; installing fail-safe, self-identifying alarms; and optimizing airflow for variable sash positions increased indoor environmental safety for lab occupants.
Located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford University is recognized as one of the world's leading research and teaching institutions. Stanford opened its doors in 1891, and more than a century later, it remains dedicated to finding solutions to the great challenges of the day and to preparing our students for leadership in today's complex world.
