Sustainable Hospitals

With more than 5,800 hospitals in the United States, health services
is the nation's second largest industry, representing an annual
gross domestic product of $590 billion. Driven by increasing costs
and shrinking reimbursements for patient care, hospitals are looking
deeper for opportunities to control or even reduce costs. Adopting
measures to increase a hospital's energy efficiency is one approach.
Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Building Performance and
Diagnostics is a leader in the design of energy efficient, environmentally
responsive office buildings. Recently, the Center was awarded a
research contract by the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh under
a planning grant from the Heinz Foundation to apply its expertise
toward the design of a new Children's Hospital at the University
of Pittsburgh.
Attendees of this breakfast session explored opportunities for
collaboration on the topic of high performance, sustainable hospitals.
