Pharmaceutical Laboratories Working
Group
The Pharmaceutical Laboratories Industry Working Group focuses
on the unique challenges the pharmaceutical industry faces in achieving
energy-efficient sustainable design without sacrificing health and
safety concerns.
Recent Activities
-
In 2006, Labs21 and conference co-sponsor I2SL hosted a pre-conference symposium, High-Performance Hospitals: Technical Challenges, Sustainable Solutions, during which panelists presented on new cleanroom regulations for laboratories and hospitals.
-
The working group hosted special pharmaceutical
sessions at the Labs21 2003, 2005, and 2006 Annual Conferences. Learn how
the session explored new strategies for designing high-performance
pharmaceutical laboratories.
- Learn about the first-ever phone forum held May 12, 2003, on "Implementing
Cost Management Strategies into Your Laboratory Design."
- At the Labs21 2002 Annual Conference, Labs21 sponsored a session to explore
successful energy efficiency projects in pharmaceutical laboratories.
The session included presentations by Bristol-Myers Squibb and
GlaxoSmithKline on laboratory fume hood operation, as well as
a discussion of the barriers and solutions to improved performance.

Pharmaceutical Industry
Issue Paper (
8 pp., 34 KB, about
PDF)
This paper outlines the challenges facing the pharmaceutical
laboratory community, including:
- Encouraging scientific staff to work meaningfully with facility
managers.
- Designing laboratories that accommodate changes in space
and equipment needs, eliminate the potential for cross contamination
and other hazards, and maintain effective air dilution or
exhaust.
- Maximizing opportunities for increased environmental performance
when designing new or retrofitting existing pre-production
testing facilities or pilot plants.
- Sharing information on new technologies and best practices.
