University of California, Berkeley

Rendering of Berkeley's future Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences.

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is working to erect the new Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences—named in honor of the philanthropist who, in supporting the facility, provided the single largest international gift that the campus has ever received. Construction of the 200,000 square-foot research center is slated to begin in 2008 and be completed in 2010. Once finished, the facility will house the Henry H. Wheeler, Jr., Brain Imaging Center, and provide laboratory space for teams carrying out research on cancer, neuroscience, infectious diseases, stem cell biology, and computational biology.

As with the entire UC system, the Berkeley campus has already committed to reducing the environmental impact of all new construction by striving for LEED® equivalency in its building design and construction process. Numerous features are being considered to help reach that goal for the Li Ka Shing Center, including right-sizing equipment and incorporating green roofs. The most prominent environmental performance goal of the design team, however, is to increase energy efficiency. The local utility company has agreed to significantly raise the energy efficiency incentive for this construction, recognizing the design team's goal of designing the center to use 20 percent less energy than California's already stringent energy standards.

Labs21 has provided significant support for this project since its early stages by participating in a sustainability goal setting meeting and HVAC charrette. Continuing to provide technical assistance throughout the design process, Labs21 has undertaken comprehensive reviews of the facility's schematic drawings and energy modeling results.

First attended by 191 students in 1873, the University of California, Berkeley, has grown to over 30,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Consistently ranked as one of the best public universities in the United States, Berkeley continues to provide outstanding academic and research facilities, helping 97 percent of its graduate programs rank in the top 10 in their fields.
