The University at Buffalo, State University of New York

The University at Buffalo (UB), State University of New York, is converting an existing campus building into its new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The 161,700 square-foot building is being retrofitted with a design focus on energy efficiency and goal of LEED® Silver certification.

The lower two floors of the building will house classrooms, offices, and four lecture halls. The upper two floors will house the school’s research facilities, including a 5,000 net square-foot animal facility. With the constant presence of specimens in the animal facility, air purity and change rate are a great concern for the architects and engineers. Accordingly, variable air volume fume hoods will be used along with occupancy sensors to adjust air change rates based on actual need. To achieve its primary goal of energy efficiency, the design team has also implemented an energy recovery system that includes an advanced heating and cooling system that will utilize heat recovery and the buildings own chilled water.

With the support of Labs21, UB will continue on the path to LEED certification. Labs21 has encouraged the use of occupancy sensors to further increase efficiency of the air change systems and will support the design team in making decisions that will coincide with the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria.
