California Polytechnic State University
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly)
is currently planning its new Center for Science and Mathematics.
The 173,000-square-foot facility will house approximately 61,000
square feet of laboratory space. The laboratory space will predominantly
act as a teaching facility for chemistry and physics, but will also
include research space for faculty, a Polymers and Coatings Center,
and an Environmental Biotechnology Center. Cal Poly will begin construction
on the facility in mid-2008 and estimates completion in 2011.
In designing the center, Cal Poly is dedicated to using the most
energy-efficient design possible. With the support of Labs21, the
design team is particularly focused on reducing air demand and efficiently
dealing with the Center's cooling load. Labs21 will continue
to provide support to Cal Poly throughout the design and construction
of their new facility. For more information on Cal Poly's
commitment to sustainability, visit the University's Sustainability Web page.
California Polytechnic State University, located in San Luis Obispo,
California, opened its doors to 20 students in 1903. Now, over 100
years later, Cal Poly boasts over 18,000 students enrolled in seven
colleges, including the College of Architecture and Environmental
Design (CAED). CAED's Sustainable Environments minor program
won top national honors for "ecological literacy" from
the American Institute of Architects in 2005. For more information,

Poly Web site.
