The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has applied the Labs21 approach to all of its new laboratory construction and retrofit projects. In particular, EPA has launched a major renovation of the Andrew W. Breidenbach Environmental Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio—transforming the facility into a state-of-the-art, flexible, energy-efficient laboratory. EPA's goal is to reduce energy consumption at the lab by more than 40 percent through a major overhaul of the building's systems and infrastructure.

Other improvements are underway at the Science and Technology Center in Kansas City, Kansas; the Region 1 Laboratory in Chelmsford, Massachusetts; the Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Center in Ada, Oklahoma; and facilities in Richmond, California; Athens, Georgia; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
