University of Hawaii
Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology
The University of Hawaii is retrofitting the Hawaii Institute of
Marine Biology to become a model in sustainability for the rest
of the university, the city and county of Honolulu, and the state
of Hawaii. Goals include achieving a LEED®
gold rating, reducing energy consumption in other existing and planned
buildings by between 25 to 50 percent, and reducing dependence on
outside sources of water by 80 percent.
Located on Coconut Island in Kane'ohe Bay, the Hawai'i Institute
of Marine Biology is a world-renowned research institute for zoology
and oceanography. Both the new Pauley-Pagen Marine Laboratory and
Coconut Island itself serve as research facilities. For more on
