Over the next two years, Northern Arizona University
will design and construct a cutting-edge facility on its campus
called the Applied Research and Development Facility. This facility
will serve as a center for collaborative research in engineering,
biogenetics, and bio-informatics, and will also act as a technology
transfer hub that will generate economic opportunities for Northern
Arizona and Colorado Plateau. This high performance building will
not only act as a regional model for energy efficient laboratory
and building design, but also as a learning laboratory that will
teach and demonstrate the best of today's renewable energy and
water conservation technologies. With the goal of achieving a
platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating
system, the facility aspires to be the most energy efficient government
building in the State of Arizona.
Unlike most academic facilities, the 100,000 square
foot building will be designed with future flexibility in mind.
Like a commercial office building, the facility will include modular
office and research spaces that can be fit-up, taken down, and
reconfigured to meet changing demands. Base building infrastructure
will also support both wet and dry labs. Specific building details
include:
Located in Flagstaff, Arizona, Northern Arizona
University is small university with a solid reputation. While
NAU's emphasis is undergraduate education, the university also
offers graduate programs and research that build from its base
on the Colorado Plateau and extend to such national concerns as
forest health and bioterrorism. For more on NAU, please visit
