Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Battelle
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) located in Richland, Washington, is under transformation. The largest construction effort in its 44-year history is underway. The Physical Sciences Facility (PSF) research complex—jointly sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security—is one construction project at PNNL. The PSF is a nearly 200,000-square-foot facility that will have 66,700 square feet of laboratory space for radiological, materials science and chemical research. Construction began in 2007 and is expected to be complete in 2010. The research complex incorporates many environmentally friendly features and is tracking to Leadership in Energy Efficiency Design (LEED®) certification with the possibility of achieving Silver level certification depending on final credit approvals. The environmentally-friendly features include using:
- A high-efficiency central chilled water plant
- Condensed heating hot water boilers and h igh efficien cy water heaters
- Variable air volum e (VAV) for HVAC and fume hood exhaust systems
- Lighting controls and day-lighting features
- Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) motor controls on chillers, fans and pumps
Water conservation measures include:
- High-efficiency urinals (pint flush)
- High-efficiency toilets
- Process water use reduction by using a process chilled water loop for equipment cooling
- Hands free low consumption faucets
Also, in order to directly monitor the success of features incorporated in the final construction, a sub-metering system is being installed that will document energy consumption so that savings can be calculated.
Since its creation in 1965, the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has produced dozens of major innovations and advances in the areas of the environment, energy, health, national security, and the basic sciences that support these areas. Managed by Battelle, PNNL is dedicated to improving its environmental impact by being a member of EPA's National Environmental Performance Track and implementing an International Organization of Standards certified (ISO 14001) Environmental Management System.
