University of Rochester

Schematic of The University of Rochester's Biomedical Engineering and Optics Building

The University of Rochester is home to the world-renowned Institute of Optics, established in 1929, as the country's first training program in optics, and the rapidly advancing Department of Biomedical Engineering. Under the Biomedical Engineering/Optics (BME/Optics) Initiative, the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Institute of Optics will share a new research and teaching facility.

The new BME/Optics Building will be a nexus of collaboration, allowing for the interaction of faculty with complementary areas of specialization and innovative, interdisciplinary research. The highly charged, creative atmosphere resulting from the co-location of BME and Optics calls for approximately 102,000 gross square feet of teaching and research laboratory space; administrative and faculty office space; shared conference rooms; a fifty and a one hundred seat lecture hall; an atrium lobby space; and an area dedicated to Institute Ventures. The dedicated lab space will comprise approximately 26,000 net square feet. Construction on the project began in April 2005, and is scheduled to be completed in December 2006.

The University of Rochester (located in Rochester, N.Y.) is one of the nation's leading private universities. One of the most collegiate in character among members of the Association of American Universities, Rochester has a personal scale that creates exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary study and close work with faculty. The University consistently ranks among the top colleges and universities nationwide in federally financed science, engineering, medical, and other research.
