U.S. Department of Agriculture

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is constructing new facilities in Ames, Iowa to replace outdated and inefficient facilities currently used by the Animal and Plant Health inspection Service (APHIS) Exit National Veterinary Services Laboratories and Center for Veterinary Biologics, and the Agricultural Research ServiceExit National Animal Disease Center.

The goal is to design and construct the new facilities to serve as a model of sustainability for the rest of USDA. This will be achieved through: an information exchange to share best practices with other USDA construction design activities; reducing energy consumption by 30 to 50 percent as benchmarked against similar facilities; identifying campuswide opportunities for energy recovery while maintaining biological containment; maximizing water use by 30 percent through collection, recycling, and other techniques; maximizing the specification of green building products; and striving for a LEED® Silver rating for all new USDA laboratory buildings.

The USDA has many responsiblilities, including ensuring the safety of the nation's food supply, conserving soil quality and the natural environment, and protecting animal health. The vision of the USDA is to provide for "a healthy and productive Nation in harmony with the land." For more on this partner, please visit www.usda.gov. Exit
