Wright State University

Wright State University logo

Wright State University started construction on its new research laboratory, Biological Sciences III (Bio Sci III), during summer of 2006. The more than 45,000-square-foot facility is the largest new construction being undertaken as part of Wright State's renewal of the College of Science and Mathematics facilities. When completed in fall 2007 it will house biochemical and biomedical laboratories.

As an institution, Wright State is a proponent of sustainable laboratory design, and has registered Bio Sci III with the goal of reaching LEED® Silver certification. An ecocharette was carried out during the design phase that initiated the integrative design process with the goal of reducing the environmental impact of all facility systems. Some of the design aspects include architectural features that maximize daylighting, sunshading devices that help manage solar gain, and waterless urinals and high-efficiency toilets that improve water efficiency.

To help illustrate the benefits of sustainable laboratory design, a display will be placed in the lobby of the new facility that indicates real time energy usage of all building systems. The data collected through this effort will be shared with Labs21 for use in development of its benchmarking tools and standards. Having already participated in the ecocharrette and reviewed initial mechanical drawings and specifications of Bio Sci III, Labs21 will continue to provide technical support throughout construction of the laboratory.

Named after the world-famous Wright brothers, Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, continues their spirit of innovation.
