Implementing Cost Management Strategies Into Your Laboratory Design

On May 12, 2003, more than 50 participants dialed in for the first-ever Labs21 phone forum on "Implementing Cost Management Strategies into Your Laboratory Design" with a focus on pharmaceutical laboratories.

Featured Speaker: Jay Shoemaker, AIA, Principal & Director, Science & Technology, Francis Cauffman Foley Hoffman, Ltd.

Cost management is an essential part of laboratory design. Given even-tighter schedules and ever-greater pressures to reduce costs while providing for escalating user needs, companies require sound information on final construction costs—from the earliest conceptual planning stage to ribbon cutting.

The phone forum introduced a laboratory design process that includes a cost manager as an integral part of the design team, with an emphasis on energy conservation and sustainable lab design. With examples from the pharmaceutical industry, the presentation described how the architect and engineer, working closely with the cost manager, can develop creative and sustainable design alternatives and provide the owner with the tools needed to guide and manage their own constituents.

The phone forum was hosted by the Labs21 Pharmaceutical Industry Forum.
